Timothy James Grenell was born to parents James H. and Marilyn Turk Grenell on August 22, 1957 in Hennepin County, Minnesota. He grew up in the suburbs of Minneapolis and then joined the Army. He had siblings Dennis,  Deane and Sheila.

He married Rosemarie Johnson on February 28, 1986 and they had daughters Katherine and Lindsey.  He was a chef.

He died February 20, 2009 and his remains were cremated.
