Donald McCollum

Donald McCollum was born June 10, 1925 in Shevlin to James and Emma McCollum. He grew up in Moose Creek and attended county school in Moose Creek through the 8th grade. 

Don enlisted in the Navy on January 28, 1944 at 19 years of age. He was sent to Farragut, Idaho for boot camp, then on to Oakland, California for training as an engineman. His duty station was aboard the USS Monticello (AP-61), a transport ship transporting soldiers to the European theater to wage and win the war against the Axis.

Don was honorably discharged on November 7, 1953, then spent four years with the Naval Reserve from 1967-1971.

Don passed away on July 24, 1998 and is buried in Moose Creek Cemetery south of Shevlin.
