George Joseph Thoreson was born on December 29, 1920 to parents Hjalmer and Alma Lund Thoresen in Fosston. He had a brother Melvin and two sisters Arna and Ruth. He attended country school in his district with Lette Fotland as his teacher. He helped with the family’s dairy farm until his brother came home from the war, then he enlisted in the U.S. Army at Fort Snelling on April 2, 1946. The length of his enlistment was “the duration of the war plus six months.”
George served mainly in Yokohama, Japan in the post-war occupation of Japan. He was discharged on April 2, 1947.
George never married or had children, but he was a much-loved uncle and great uncle to his nieces and nephews and their children. His dog Bimbo was his longtime companion. George died on the 18th of April in 2005 at age 84 and is buried in the Bagley City Cemetery.
