Halcomb Stavig
Halcomb Leo Stavig was born February 25, 1911 in East Grand Forks, Minnesota to Bernt and Jetta Cherum Stavig. He was baptized May 21, 1911 in United Lutheran, Grand Forks. His family moved to a farm in Popple Township in Clearwater County in 1916 and the children all attended Minnow Lake School, now the Popple Town Hall.
Halcomb was married and working for McCloud River Lumber Company in McCloud, California when he registered for the draft on October 16, 1940. He enlisted in the Navy on November 12, 1942 and was sent to the South Pacific with the SeaBees (Construction Battalion). He helped to build many air strips and rebuild the bombed-out air strips. He received an honorable discharge on October 11, 1945.
Halcomb returned to California and resumed working as a machine operator. He and his wife Juanita lived in Chico, California when he passed away on February 20, 1989 and he is buried there.
