James A. (Jim) Schroeder was born September 16, 1935 in Morristown, Minnesota to Arnold and Emma Schroeder. He grew up in Morristown and attended Morristown Elementary. He graduated from Morristown High School in 1953. He later attended St. Cloud State University.

Jim enlisted in the Navy on September 9, 1953 and was sent to Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois for boot camp. He attended Machinist Mate training in Norfolk, Virginia. He was then stationed aboard the USS Taconic (AGC-17) for the rest of his enlistment. The Taconic was an Adirondack class amphibious force command ship named after the Taconic Mountains in New York. An amphibious force command ship is a floating command post with advanced communications equipment and extensive combat information spaces to be used by the amphibious forces commander and landing force commander during large-scale operations. Jim received an honorable discharge on September 7, 1956.

Jim passed away on December 17, 2017. He is buried in the Camp Ripley Veteran’s Cemetery.
