James Donald Johnson was born June 25, 1942 in Leon Township, Clearwater County, Minnesota to parents Clarence and Dora Johnson. James attended the Beard School in Leon township and graduated from Clearbrook High School in 1962.

James entered the Army in 1966. He took basic and advanced training at Fort Riley, Kansas, then was sent to Vietnam as a member of the 9^th Infantry Division. He received an honorable discharge in May of 1968.

He currently lives in Bloomington, Minnesota.
