James Robert Cairns was born August 21st, 1938 in Trimont, Minnesota to James George and Margorie Olson Cairns. He grew up in the Trimont area and attended country school. He graduated in 1956 from Trimont High School.

James enlisted in the Army in February of 1957 and was sent to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri for basic training. He attended advanced training in supply and equipment transfers. Following training he was stationed with the 5th Army Division and attached to the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He received an honorable discharge in 1965.

James currently resides in Bagley.
