Joe A. Balik was born June 12, 1916 in Bagley, Minnesota to parents Joe and Stephanie Balik. He had a brother William and a sister Mary. He grew up in Bagley and attended Bagley schools. He graduated from Bagley High School in 1935. 

When he entered the Army he was sent to Hattiesburg, Misssissippi to Camp Shelby.  He was sent to North Africa as part of the 85th Division, then was attached to the 316th Combat Engineer Battalion in Italy.

Joe died on June 18, 200 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
