John Albert Hedin
John Albert Hedin Jr. was born May 27, 1925 in Duluth, Minnesota to John Hedin Sr. and Agnes Nelson Hedin. He moved with his family to Gonvick in 1929 where they lived on an 80-acre farm that had been in Agnes’s family. For three years attended District #33 rural school, then graduated from Gonvick High School in 1943.
John joined the Merchant Marines and was stationed at Sheep’s Head Bay, New York, for training. He could take the subway to Coney Island for 10 cents and buy a hotdog for a nickel. He discovered first-hand that he did not like the huge roller coaster at Coney Island. John was in Times Square in July of 1945 when the Germans surrendered. With the war over, John was discharged in the fall of 1945.
John passed away November 15, 2009 and is buried at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery-Hansville in rural Fosston.
