Marvel Thompson was born July 5, 1022 on the family farm in Itasca Township to parents Edward and Mabel Thompson. Marvel grew up in the Vern Community of Itasca Township and attended school at Vern.

He entered the Navy on April 17, 1945 and was sent to the Great Lakes Naval Base in Illinois for boot camp. He served at Davisville, Rhode Island, Camp Parks, California and in Okinawa as a member of the 58^th Construction Battalion (Seabees). He rose through the ranks first as an Able Seaman, then Seaman 2^nd class, Seaman 1^st class and Coxswain. He received an honorable discharge on June 12, 1946.

Marvel died December 13, 2015 and is buried in the Sell Lake Church Cemetery south of Shevlin.
