Ray Waggoner was born on March 23, 1924 in Des Lacs County, North Dakota. His parents were Robert Shannon and Mary Waggoner. Ray had a twin brother Roy. He grew up in the Bagley/Shevlin area and attended Bagley schools.
He enlisted in the Navy on April 22, 1944 and was sent to the U.S. Naval Training Center at Great Lakes, Illinois. His military specialty was gunner’s mate. He was discharged at war’s end on November 30, 1945.
Ray married Mary Marsh on April 7, 1946 at Shevlin. They moved to Regent, North Dakota in 1951 where he farmed and worked with his brother Bob in the coal mining business. They moved to Clearwater County in 1959 and bought a farm in Moose Creek Township south of Shevlin. Ray and Mary had children Sandra, Terry, Todd, Tracy and Thomas.
Ray served on many boards including the Co-op Elevator, AMPI, Clearwater County FSA and the Moose Creek Town Board. He was a member of the Clearwater Lutheran Church and the Irvin Blix American Legion Post. No. 16. Ray and Mary were voted Clearwater County Honorary Dairy Couple in 1984, and Ray received many farming awardss. He enjoyed his friends, family and farming.
Ray died on February 13, 2003 and is buried in the Clearwater Lutheran Cemetery in Shevlin.
