Tom Gardner was born December 5, 1957 in Minneapolis to Herman and Emily Gardner. He grew up in Spring Lake Park, Minnesota and attended school at St. Timothy Parochial Schoolin Blaine, Minnesota and Woodcrest Elementary in Spring Lake Park, Minnesota. His family moved to Bagley where graduated from Bagley High School in 1976. 

Tom entered the Army right after high school on June 7, 1976. He was sent to Fort Jackson, South Carolina for basic training. He trained as a 67U30 Medium Helicopter Repairer and 68G30 Aircraft Structural Repairer. He served at Fort Campbell, Kentucky and in South Korea. He received an honorable discharge on April 21, 1983.

Tom Garner died on October 28, 2000 and is buried in the Bagley City Cemetery.
