Wallace Johnson’s headstone in Fort Snelling
Wallace Leroy Johnson was born February 25, 1924 in Marshall, Minnesota to Willie E. and Rose Halvorson Johnson. Willie grew up in Oslo, Minnesota then while still a young man moved to Grand Forks. Rose grew up in Gully. Willie and Rose were married in Gully on June 18, 1921. They moved to Oslo, where Willie drove truck for Oslo Oil Co., then to Grand Forks where he drove truck for Construction Oil Company. In 1941 Willie and Rose moved to a farm in Holst Township, Clearwater County. Willie was the Clearbrook village marshal for several years. Willie and Rose had five children: Evelyn, Florence, Leona (Djernes), Robert and Wallace.
Wallace was a truck driver like his dad when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps on November 13, 1942 at Fort Snelling. He was 5’10” tall and weighed 161 pounds. He was assigned to the 2233rd Quartermaster Truck Co. 2 MC.
It is not known how Private Johnson died, but his date of death is listed as March 8, 1944 in Italy. It is listed as “non-battle.” He is buried in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
