USS Furse

Lawrence Leslie “Larry” Brustad was born November 2, 1946 in Bemidji to Leslie and Lois Brustad. He grew up in Bagley and attended Bagley schools. He graduated from Bagley High School in 1964. 

Larry joined the Navy in December of 1968. After boot camp He was sent to Newport, Rhode Island for training as a signalman. Following training, he was sent to Norfolk, Virginia, home port of the USS Furse (DD 882), a Gearing-class destroyer. Captained by Michael Greeley, the Furse operated in the Tonkin Gulf with the Seventh Fleet. Larry served aboard the Furse for his entire enlistment. He received an honorable discharge in September of 1972.

Larry currently lives in Wayzata, Minnesota.
